With less than a year until the 2026 Winter Olympics in Italy, the 12 National Men’s Hockey teams participating are beginning to reveal the first six players selected for their rosters. The full team lineups will be finalized closer to the event.

Many teams have started announcing the players who will compete in Milan, with the US and Canadian teams already showcasing impressive star power. Canada will feature Conor McDavid and Sidney Crosby in their red and white uniforms, while Team USA will include standout players like Auston Matthews and Matthew Tkachuk, donning red, white, and blue.

The 2026 Games will mark the return of NHL players at the Olympics after a 12-year absence, as they last participated in 2014. Notably, Russia is excluded from the competition due to ongoing sanctions related to the country’s invasion of Ukraine.

At the previous Winter Olympics in 2022, Finland took home the gold, with Sweden earning bronze. Both Canada and the US were eliminated in the quarter-finals. Nevertheless, Canada is aiming to assert its dominance in high-stakes tournaments, having recently secured a 3-2 overtime win against the US in a four-nation event, with McDavid scoring the decisive goal.

The US has yet to finalize its full reserve roster, but early announcements highlight key players from various countries competing in 2026. Notable italy players named include Diego Kostner, Daniel Maintained, Tommy Purdeller, Luca Zanatta, Thomas Larkin, and Damien Clara.

Fan Take: This early glimpse into the 2026 Olympic hockey rosters is thrilling for fans as it promises a high-caliber competition featuring top NHL talents after over a decade away from the Games. The return of NHL stars could elevate the profile of Olympic hockey, inspiring greater global interest and competitiveness in the sport.
