Caleb Hayes and Todd Stevens, seasoned gate crew members with extensive experience, have been named head starters at Kentucky racetracks, according to the Paulick Report. Hayes will lead the starting duties at Churchill Downs and Turfway Park, while Stevens will take charge at Ellis Park.

Hayes, who has been a key figure at Churchill Downs for nearly two decades, recently transitioned from interim starter to head starter during the spring meet. Over his 19-year career at the gates, including 17 years at Churchill Downs, Hayes has worked under notable starters like “Spec” Alexander, Scott Jordan, and Jeff Powell. He has also handled high-profile horses, such as Kentucky Derby champions Nyquist and Mystic Dan. Hayes follows in the footsteps of his late father, Danton “Danny” Hayes, a respected jockey and former assistant starter. Expressing his honor at the appointment, Hayes said he feels privileged to continue the legacy at these historic venues.

Ben Huffman, Vice President of Racing at Churchill Downs, praised Hayes for earning this role through years of leadership and respect, highlighting his integrity and composed demeanor.

At Ellis Park, Todd Stevens is set to become head starter for the Summer 2025 meet. Stevens brings over 25 years of experience, mainly from Golden Gate Fields and previously Baymeadows, which closed in 2008. Bailey Hare, Ellis Park Racing secretary, highlighted Stevens’ extensive expertise, calling him a valuable addition to the racing team.

Both Hayes and Stevens are preparing to step into their new roles soon.

This news is important for horse racing fans because experienced and reliable starters are crucial for the smooth and fair conduct of races. Having veterans like Hayes and Stevens in these key positions promises better race management and upholds the integrity of the sport.
