NBA Summer League Spotlight: Ace Bailey Scores 8 in Debut, VJ Edgecombe Dominates with 28 Points and Dunk of the Night

The first day of NBA Summer League featured a showdown between two top-five draft picks: VJ Edgecombe of the Philadelphia 76ers and Ace Bailey of the Utah Jazz. Only one player delivered a star-caliber performance.

That standout was Edgecombe, the third overall pick in the 2025 NBA Draft. He looked like the best player on the court, showing the skills of someone who followed NBA action closely last season by scoring 28 points, grabbing 10 rebounds, and dishing out 4 assists.

Edgecombe’s highlight came with a dazzling dunk, showcasing athleticism that simply can’t be taught.

Despite Edgecombe’s performance, the Jazz edged out the Sixers with a 93-89 win. Bailey finished with 8 points, shooting efficiently from the field, and collected 7 rebounds.

In the lead-up to the draft, there was speculation that the Sixers might have one of the most high-powered prospects, but they ultimately selected Edgecombe. They may have favored his style, especially after Bailey reportedly declined to work out for them, a factor that likely influenced the decision. Regardless, Edgecombe’s performance on this night justified their choice.

Much of the attention during the game went to Baylor alumni, who frequently made impactful plays.

Bailey drew extra attention because of his unusual pre-draft behavior. He reportedly refused to work out for any teams, aiming to be picked by a specific franchise early in the first round. Utah wasn’t that preferred team, so selecting him fifth came with risks. However, after some awkward moments post-draft, Bailey showed up ready to prove himself and denied having any issues starting his NBA journey with the Jazz.

Back on the court on Saturday, Bailey had his moments to shine.

Other NBA rookies also showed promise. Former Auburn player Johnny Bloom had a solid game with 13 points and 5 rebounds, while Florida’s Walter Clayton Jr., the 18th pick and standout from the Final Four, contributed 9 points, 6 assists, and 3 rebounds off the bench. Additionally, last year’s second pick Kyle Filippowski led the Jazz with 22 points.

Fan Take: This early NBA Summer League action is a thrilling preview of the future stars in the league, with Edgecombe clearly making a statement. Basketball fans should watch these young talents closely, as their development could shape the next era of the NBA.
