Matthew Hutchison, a goaltender for the Moose Jaw Warriors, was among several WHL players who took part in this year’s NHL development camp. Hutchison, who was invited to the Vancouver Canucks camp, had the chance to train with the team he has supported since childhood. The experience was unforgettable for him, and he plans to use the skills he gained in the upcoming WHL season.

Hutchison, originally from Nanaimo, BC, spent his whole career in British Columbia before being traded to Moose Jaw. Being invited to the Canucks’ development camp held special meaning for him as he grew up a fan of the team. Hutchison expressed how much the invitation meant, emphasizing that it felt like being part of his own team and provided a valuable opportunity to learn and improve his game.

He was one of 16 undrafted players invited to the Canucks’ camp, which serves as a chance for teams to evaluate unsigned talent they might consider for future contracts. Although not a draft prospect at the time, Hutchison received significant attention and developmental support during the week-long camp.

Hutchison also highlighted the supportive environment at the camp, noting that coaches were dedicated to helping every player, regardless of their draft status. He absorbed as much as he could by observing other goalkeepers and players, aiming to elevate his own performance.

Looking ahead, the 2025-26 season presents a major opportunity for Hutchison, who is expected to be the starting goalie for the Warriors and could become one of the top WHL goalies eligible for the 2026 NHL Entry Draft. A strong season could see him returning to development camp next year, this time as a drafted prospect.

Fan Take: This story is important for hockey fans because it highlights the development path of promising young talent outside the draft spotlight, showing how perseverance and growth can lead to NHL opportunities. Hutchison’s journey exemplifies the vital role development camps play in uncovering and nurturing future stars, which benefits the sport by broadening the talent pool.
