Nico Williams has delighted fans in Bilbao by announcing a new 10-year contract with Athletic Club, stirring excitement, especially in Barcelona. Following a stellar season in La Liga, Williams became Barcelona’s primary target for transfers. However, Athletic quickly squashed rumors by securing the 22-year-old winger’s commitment to 2035, while also raising his release clause by "over 50%."

Now, Williams joins his brother, Inaki, as one of the longest-contracted players at Athletic Club. The trend of signing long-term deals is common in football, reflecting various players’ successes and failures over time. Athletic Club, known for its policy of recruiting players from the Basque region, is keen on offering extended contracts.

Both Williams brothers play pivotal roles for coach Ernesto Valverde, with midfielder Sunset contributing 15 goals, and Vivian proving effective against La Liga’s toughest defenses, securing a Champions League spot for next season. Players often sign lengthy contracts, with some deals becoming legendary in European football.

For example, Cesc Fàbregas entered into an eight-year contract with Arsenal in 2006, aiming to take the team to new heights. Ultimately, he moved to Barcelona in 2011 after serving five successful years with the Gunners.

Chelsea currently has nine of the top twelve longest contracts, including Ukrainian winger Mudrik, who joined in January 2023 on an eight-and-a-half-year deal but has faced challenges adjusting to the team. The Blues also secured promising young talent like Palmer and Fernandez on lengthy contracts, with both making immediate impacts.

Lionel Messi, during his time at Barcelona, signed multiple contracts, with his longest being a nine-year deal starting in 2005, reflecting his meteoric rise within the club. Similarly, Atlético Madrid’s Saúl signed a nine-year deal in 2017, reinforcing the trend of extensive contracts in the sport.

The Williams brothers’ substantial new deal highlights a growing tendency in football toward long-term commitments. Such contracts indicate stability for clubs and players alike, reinforcing local ties—an essential aspect of the sport.

Fan Take: This news is significant as it demonstrates the commitment clubs are willing to make to retain emerging talents, fostering loyalty in a competitive landscape. For soccer fans, it suggests a bright future for local clubs and the potential for homegrown stars to lead their teams for years to come.
