Nugget Anticipates Jonan Valanshanas Will Honor Contract Commitment, Sources Say

One of the most beneficial moves for the Denver Nuggets this offseason has been acquiring Jonas Valanciunas. He is expected to become the top backup center during the era of Nikola Jokic in Denver. Valanciunas reportedly expressed interest in playing in Europe and had discussions with the Greek powerhouse Panathinaikos, who supposedly offered him a $13 million contract over three years.

However, the biggest hurdle isn’t Valanciunas’ willingness to play in Europe or Panathinaikos’ interest but Denver’s stance. Valanciunas is under a two-year, $20 million contract with the Nuggets, which he cannot simply waive, nor can he leave the team easily due to FIBA regulations. The Nuggets have made it clear to Valanciunas’ representatives that they fully intend to honor his contract, as reported by Shams Charania of ESPN. This firm position likely ends any immediate negotiations.

While this could be a negotiation strategy from Denver, it’s unlikely they plan to let Valanciunas go easily. The Nuggets aim to be competitive next season, and Valanciunas is a crucial piece, especially considering Denver’s past struggles with non-starter minutes. His skill set—including dribbling handoffs and midrange shots—allows Denver to maintain offensive consistency even when Jokic is resting, complementing other players like Bruce Brown, Peyton Watson, and Julian Strawther.

For Valanciunas to move to Greece, it will be a lengthy process that requires Denver’s cooperation. According to FIBA rules, a player under contract like Valanciunas needs a "Letter of Clearance" to sign with another team internationally. This means both Valanciunas and the Nuggets must agree to terminate his contract, which would typically require him to forgo his remaining salary. FIBA would then issue the clearance letter for him to sign elsewhere.

The big question remains: why would Denver agree to this? Perhaps they might keep Valanciunas for the upcoming season and reassess his situation later. As it stands, the Nuggets have improved their roster this offseason and are strong contenders for another championship. They are unlikely to let Valanciunas leave without a fight.

Fan Take: This situation underscores the growing importance of strategic player retention amid international opportunities in basketball. For fans, it highlights how teams balance contract commitments with player ambitions, making roster decisions that could shape the NBA’s competitive landscape for years to come.
