In Chicago, Shane Van Gisbergen added another historic achievement to his racing career, this time on the same streets where he made significant NASCAR history. The New Zealander, who clinched his first Chicago Street Race win during his 2023 Cup debut, secured his second victory in three years at the track, leading comfortably for the Tigibbs team as the final lap unfolded. Van Gisbergen became only the second driver to win both the Xfinity and Cup races over a weekend from the pole position, joining Kyle Busch, who did the feat in 2016 at Indianapolis.

With his third career Cup win, Van Gisbergen now holds the record as the most successful foreign-born driver in NASCAR Cup Series history. Initially, he had no plans to race full-time in NASCAR, but since his one-off race for Trackhouse two years ago, the Chicago street circuit has vastly changed his career outlook. Shortly after the race, a controversial caution flag was issued: as Van Gisbergen began his final lap, Cody Ware crashed into the Turn 6 tire barrier, but NASCAR waited to throw the caution until after Van Gisbergen crossed the start-finish line, finalizing the race under yellow and denying a possible overtime restart. Ty Gibbs and Tyler Reddick, who finished second and third respectively, expressed disappointment at missing a chance to challenge Van Gisbergen again at the restart.

Tensions ran high among drivers, particularly with Joey Logano, who accused Ross Chastain of intentionally causing a collision and called for penalties. Other drivers like Bubba Wallace and Alex Bowman also exchanged heated words after close on-track incidents. Looking ahead, NASCAR’s contract with Chicago’s Parks Department runs for three years but there is speculation that future street races might shift to San Diego, a move met with mixed feelings among drivers who appreciate street racing’s appeal but understand the logistics of relocation.

Bob Pokras, who reports on NASCAR and INDYCAR for Fox Sports, noted that the Chicago race has become a pivotal event for drivers like Van Gisbergen and is influential in bringing new fans to the sport.

Fan Take: Shane Van Gisbergen’s continued success on the Chicago street circuit signals a growing international influence in NASCAR, which could broaden the sport’s fan base and global appeal. The controversy over the final caution highlights how split-second decisions shape race outcomes and keep the competitive drama alive, making every event unforgettable for fans.
