Sounders Keeper Stephen Frey Rushed to Ambulance Following Head Injury Collision Against Columbus

Seattle Sounders goalkeeper Stefan Frei is undergoing evaluation for head and neck injuries after a frightening incident that required him to be transported off the field in an ambulance. This occurred during the closing minutes of a match against the Columbus Crew, which ended in a 1-1 tie.

In the 97th minute, a free kick was awarded to Columbus just outside the penalty area. While defending the set piece, Frei collided head-first with a player’s knee and fell to the ground, prompting an immediate response from medical personnel as his teammates called for help.

After the impact, Frei appeared to be in a fencing posture, a typical response when someone suffers a head injury or concussion. Players from both teams gathered around him as an ambulance arrived on the field, and the crowd cheered for Frei as he was taken away.

Following the match, Sounders coach Brian Schmetzer informed reporters that Frei was closely monitored while being transported but was undergoing checks for head and neck injuries. "We will provide updates once we have clear and accurate information,” Schmetzer stated. “Our medical staff acted cautiously, which I greatly appreciate.”

Despite the collision happening late in the game, the match continued for several more minutes until it was ultimately called off. Schmetzer managed to request the referee to end the game after hearing the final whistle in the 103rd minute, acknowledging Columbus coach Wilfried Nancy for his role in ensuring player safety.

Afterward, both the league and the Crew expressed their support for Frei. In a message posted on X that evening, Frei indicated that he was home resting.

"I’m still trying to grasp what happened at the end of the match, but I’m incredibly thankful to everyone who helped me. Your messages and support mean the world to me,” he wrote.

Frei, 39, has been a key player for the Sounders since joining in 2014, helping the team secure two MLS Cups and a CONCACAF Champions League title, as well as earning an All-Star selection and the MVP award in the 2016 MLS Cup.

Sunday’s game was anticipated as a rematch of the 2020 MLS Cup, featuring Columbus striker Diego Rossi scoring first in the 27th minute, while the Sounders equalized through a well-placed pass from Paul Rothrock to Kalani Lienzi. Both teams had several chances to take the lead before the match concluded.

Fan Take: This incident shines a light on the crucial importance of player safety in soccer, a factor that resonates deeply with fans who want to see the best players healthy on the field. Frei’s ongoing recovery will not only impact the Sounders’ lineup but also highlight the need for better protocols to protect players in high-stress situations.
