McLaren Addresses Oscar Piastri’s Claim That Their Plea Was “Unfair”

Andrea Stella, the McLaren team principal, confirmed that Oscar Piastri’s request to swap positions with teammate Lando Norris at the British Grand Prix was acceptable. Piastri led the early part of the rain-affected race at Silverstone after overtaking Max Verstappen, but his chance of victory was ruined by a 10-second penalty for unsafe driving before the safety car period ended.

The penalty cost Piastri significant track position, leaving him behind Norris, his teammate and championship rival, after his second pit stop. Following this, Piastri cheekily asked the team on the radio if he could swap places with Norris. Although McLaren agreed the penalty was harsh, the team ultimately denied the request.

Stella explained, “We always encourage drivers to speak up about what they’re thinking, and Oscar did just that. We considered his suggestion carefully.” He added that the team’s strategy was to let Piastri keep the lead during safety car phases, with the plan that he would serve the penalty later and maintain the original order between the two McLarens. Once Piastri served the penalty and the team switched to dry tires, he hoped to restore the usual racing order but accepted the team’s decision as fair.

Piastri himself admitted he anticipated the team would reject the request but felt it was worth asking. He believed it wouldn’t be fair to swap positions since his teammate Norris had done nothing wrong.

Fan Take: This situation highlights the delicate balance teams must strike between fairness and strategy in racing, especially when managing teammates competing for the championship. Fans should watch closely as these kinds of decisions could influence how intra-team dynamics impact the championship battle and the future of team orders in Formula 1.
