Ben Askren’s Wife Reveals Former Fighter Might Face Lung Transplant: “Holding on to Hope for a Miracle”

Ben Askren, a former UFC fighter, is currently undergoing evaluation for a lung transplant after developing severe pneumonia, according to his wife, Amy. Askren is on a ventilator as medical professionals continue to monitor his condition. Last week, Amy revealed that he is in critical condition following a staphylococcal infection that caused the pneumonia. The 40-year-old is hospitalized in his hometown of Wisconsin, with Amy updating fans on social media about his status.

Amy expressed hope for a miracle with his existing lungs but shared that doctors have now started the process to determine if a lung transplant is necessary. She asked for prayers that he can be placed on the transplant list quickly and expressed gratitude for the possibility of receiving such a life-saving gift, promising that Ben will take great care of it.

Although Amy initially hoped Ben could share updates himself, Askren has so far managed to open his eyes and squeeze his hands. The retired martial arts expert and former wrestling champion is currently dependent on both ventilators and ECMO (extracorporeal membrane oxygenation). Amy also thanked supporters for their overwhelming encouragement and urged people to cherish their loved ones, emphasizing how unexpected this situation is given Ben’s typically excellent health.

Askren had three fights in the UFC and notably faced Jake Paul in a boxing match. He held the Bellator Welterweight title, remained undefeated during his first 20 professional fights, and is a two-time NCAA Division I wrestling champion and a 2008 U.S. Olympian. He and Amy have three children together.

Fan Take: This deeply concerning health update affects not only Askren’s fanbase but also the larger fighting community, who have followed his impressive career transitions from wrestling to MMA and boxing. It highlights the unpredictable and fragile nature of athletes’ health, reminding fans and fighters alike of the importance of resilience and support within the sport.
