London Knights’ Sam O’Reilly Features in Exciting NHL Trade Deal Between Edmonton and Tampa Bay

The OHL is currently under a trade freeze, allowing players to enjoy their summer and offseason training without the stress of being moved to new teams. In contrast, the NHL is actively making trades, as seen late Tuesday night when one of the top players from the London Knights found out he was traded to a new NHL team.

Nineteen-year-old Sam O’Reilly was traded from the Edmonton Oilers to the Tampa Bay Lightning in exchange for 2025 Hobey Baker Award winner Isaac Howard. This was a straight one-for-one trade. Howard has already signed an entry-level contract with Edmonton and is aiming to join their top nine forwards next season. Although Howard initially had no plans to sign with the Oilers, he was a first-round pick (31st overall) in the 2022 NHL Draft. The trade signals Tampa’s strategy to exchange skilled, offensively talented wingers for strong defensive center players.

While Howard is NHL-ready, scouts suggest that O’Reilly’s style of play, consistency, and reliability might allow him to have a longer and steadier NHL career. O’Reilly is in his second year with the London Knights, where he has helped win back-to-back OHL Championships and Memorial Cups. He achieved career-high numbers with 28 goals and 71 points and maintained a plus-80 rating over 79 regular season and playoff games combined. He was the last pick of the first round in the 2024 NHL Draft (32nd overall).

Hailing from Toronto, O’Reilly was one of the top defensive forwards in the OHL last season. With Easton Cowan and Denver Burkey moving on to the pro ranks, O’Reilly will need to step up as a primary offensive leader for London next season. Additionally, Knights fans can look forward to seeing him sign an entry-level contract, and he is not eligible to play in the NCAA.

Fan Take: This trade highlights the evolving strategies NHL teams adopt to balance offense and defense, showcasing the dynamic nature of player development. For hockey fans, it’s exciting to see young talents like O’Reilly and Howard taking big steps toward shaping the future of the sport.
