F1 Deserves to Spotlight a New “Most Underrated Driver”

Formula 1 has been waiting for a driver who could finally shed the label of being the "most underrated" on the grid, and Nico Hulkenberg’s first career podium has done just that. At the British Grand Prix, Hulkenberg finished third in his 239th race start out of 242 entries, ending his unwanted record of the most races without a podium. Sauber team principal Jonathan Wheatley described it as the longest wait for a podium in Formula 1 history.

Sky’s Naomi Schiff expressed surprise that it took Hulkenberg so long to achieve this milestone, noting the recent momentum Sauber has built, especially with Audi set to take over the team next year. Since 2010, Hulkenberg has driven for multiple teams including Williams, Force India, Sauber, Renault, Racing Point, Aston Martin, and Haas. Despite almost securing a podium with Ferrari in 2014, circumstances did not favor him, forcing him to wait over a decade for this breakthrough.

His peers have always recognized Hulkenberg’s talent, but this podium now affirms his capabilities on the F1 stage. Reflecting on his career, Jenson Button recalled Hulkenberg’s near-win during the 2013 Brazilian Grand Prix, where a safety car and a crash thwarted his victory. Button praised Hulkenberg’s consistent performance and expressed happiness that this success finally arrived.

The podium finish is a significant achievement not only for Hulkenberg but also for the Sauber team, which hadn’t reached the podium in 13 years. As the team transitions to Audi branding next season, Hulkenberg will represent the German manufacturer, marking a new chapter in both his career and the team’s future.

Fan Take: This long-awaited podium finish is a triumphant moment for Nico Hulkenberg and a testament to perseverance in Formula 1. For racing fans, it symbolizes hope and the invaluable reward of consistent hard work, while highlighting the exciting changes ahead with Audi’s entry into the sport.
