Eric Mangini Warns: Don’t Underestimate Cowboys Head Coach Brian Schottenheimer

In January, the Dallas Cowboys replaced head coach Mike McCarthy by promoting offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer to the top role, a decision that sparked criticism within the Cowboys community and confusion throughout the NFL. However, former head coach and current analyst Eric Mangini, who once worked with Schottenheimer, believes many have overlooked the strengths he brings to the position.

Mangini praised Schottenheimer’s capabilities during an appearance on “Breakfast Ball,” recalling his time as offensive coordinator for the New York Jets under Mangini’s leadership. He highlighted Schottenheimer’s strategic mindset, especially his ability to pressure defenses and adapt offensive plans while being open to incorporating new ideas.

Schottenheimer’s coaching journey includes roles such as quarterbacks coach for future Hall of Famer Drew Brees with the San Diego Chargers, offensive coordinator for the Jets from 2006 to 2011—even through a coaching change—offensive coordinator positions with the St. Louis Rams and Georgia, and quarterback coach for the Indianapolis Colts with Andrew Luck. He also served as offensive coordinator for the Seattle Seahawks and game coordinator for the Jacksonville Jaguars before joining the Cowboys as a coaching analyst in 2022, later becoming their offensive coordinator for the 2023 and 2024 seasons.

Despite Dallas finishing 7-10 last season and losing quarterback Dak Prescott to injury after eight games, Schottenheimer’s offense averaged 328.4 yards per game, ranking 16th in the league. This year, the Cowboys led the NFL in scoring with an average of 29.9 points per game and ranked fifth in total offense with 371.6 yards per game.

Mangini noted that while Schottenheimer’s role with Dallas may not seem glamorous, he is a highly capable coach comparable to other first-time head coaches. Schottenheimer’s tenure with the Cowboys officially begins on September 4th, with a season-opening road game against NFC East rival and reigning Super Bowl champion Philadelphia Eagles.

Fan Take: This coaching shift is significant for NFL fans because it shows the Cowboys betting on a seasoned offensive mind rather than a high-profile name, which could redefine their team’s strategy and success. If Schottenheimer can translate his offensive acumen into head coaching wins, it might encourage other teams to look deeper into proven coordinators when hiring new head coaches.
