Dana White Gears Up to Move Forward Beyond Jon Jones vs. Tom Aspinall Showdown

It’s been 19 months since Tom Aspinall claimed the interim UFC heavyweight title, earning a shot at the champion, Jon Jones. However, Jones has consistently avoided fighting Aspinall. UFC President Dana White recently indicated a willingness to move on without a Jones vs. Aspinall bout if a deal isn’t struck soon, setting a rough deadline for arranging a unification fight between the heavyweight champions.

White told Jim Rome, “We’ll see how this plays out in the next few weeks. If we can’t finalize this fight, we’ll move forward quickly. I’ve been saying this for weeks, and soon we’ll have clarity.” Jones has dismissed Aspinall as a worthy contender, favoring fights against bigger names like light heavyweight Alex Pereira or Francis Ngannou, although Ngannou currently lacks a UFC contract. A fan petition demanding Jones be stripped of his title has garnered nearly 200,000 signatures.

Even members of Jones’s circle are urging him to either retire or defend his belt. Several current and former UFC champions, including featherweight champion Alexander Volkanovski, have expressed their opinions on the matter. Volkanovski stated on the Overdog Podcast, “If you’re the champ, you need to defend your title. It’s your duty. You can’t just sit back. If there’s an interim champion, fighting them is the reasonable thing to do. If you don’t want to fight and don’t want to retire, then you’re done.”

Jones denies fearing Aspinall but acknowledges he needs a hefty paycheck to risk his legacy against the interim champ. Widely regarded as one of the greatest mixed martial artists, Jones remains undefeated in 30 fights, save for a controversial disqualification loss. White admitted that working with Jones can be challenging but denied claims that Jones is scared. “Jon Jones has been difficult since day one,” White said, “but if he didn’t want to fight, you’d never hear him talk the way he does.”

Fan Take: This ongoing saga highlights the tension between athlete legacy, business decisions, and fan expectations in MMA. How this standoff resolves could set an important precedent for title defenses and fighter negotiations in the UFC, ultimately shaping the sport’s competitive integrity.
