The UFC will be returning to “Magic City” for UFC Fight Night at Bridgestone Arena on July 12th, serving as a quick stop before heading to Louisiana for the next pay-per-view event. The heavyweight clash between Derrick Lewis and Tarison Teixeira will headline a night filled with exciting bouts.

Among the fighters, Australian welterweight Jake Matthews will be competing alongside seasoned veterans like Stephen Thompson and Calvin Kattar. Known as “The Celtic Kid,” Matthews has earned respect for his strong performances on MMA’s biggest stages but is also remembered for being the victim of one of the dirtiest fouls ever seen in the Octagon.

Back in February 2018, during UFC 221 in Perth, Matthews faced Li Jingliang. In the second round, while trapped in a tight guillotine choke, Matthews was gouged in the eyes by Jingliang, an act that sparked outrage throughout the MMA community. Long-time color commentator Joe Rogan was particularly outspoken, condemning the foul during his JRE MMA Show. Commentator Joe Logan also strongly criticized the move, emphasizing that such cheating should never be tolerated and calling for strict penalties to prevent it from happening again.

Sadly, the damage went beyond the immediate anger. Matthews revealed he suffered permanent eye damage from the incident, showing off his new glasses to fans on Instagram. Despite this, Matthews remains passionate about the sport and is focused on continuing his career, aiming for his third straight win as he prepares to face Chidi Njokuani at UFC Nashville.

It reminds fans and the sport alike that stricter enforcement and consequences are critical to protect fighters and maintain the integrity of MMA.
