Orlando Magic’s rising star, Paolo Banchero, recently made headlines by signing a groundbreaking contract extension with the team. Specifically, Banchero inked the largest five-year rookie deal in Orlando Magic history, valued at $239 million, with the potential to earn up to $287 million if all incentives are met.

Following the signing, Banchero expressed his strong commitment to bringing an NBA championship to Orlando. With his future secured for the next five years, former NBA player Matt Barnes encouraged Banchero to take on a more prominent leadership role within the league.

At just 22 years old, Banchero has already achieved impressive milestones, including winning NBA Rookie of the Year and making his first NBA All-Star appearance. This lucrative contract signals the Magic’s high expectations for his continued growth. Barnes highlighted Banchero’s potential to become a leading figure in the NBA, praising his versatility and athleticism, and called for his name to be included in discussions about the league’s future faces.

Co-host Rachel Nichols added that winning Rookie of the Year alone puts Banchero in that elite conversation right away. Over his career, Banchero has averaged 22.4 points, 7.1 rebounds, and 4.6 assists per game, though a deeper playoff run still eludes him, which could be a hurdle in cementing his superstar status.

Currently, LeBron James and Stephen Curry dominate as the league’s top faces, but with both nearing retirement, new stars are needed to fill the void. While Minnesota Timberwolves’ Anthony Edwards was anticipated to take on this mantle, he has publicly declined the role. This opens the door for players like Banchero to emerge as leading figures in the NBA. Alternatively, Luka Doncic of the LA Lakers could also rise to this challenge, ensuring the league has multiple promising options.

Fan Take: Paolo Banchero’s new contract and the call for him to step into a more prominent league role highlight a pivotal moment for the NBA as it prepares for a post-LeBron and Curry era. For basketball fans, Banchero’s rise symbolizes fresh hope and exciting potential for the future of the sport, promising a new generation of stars to watch.
