Tampa Bay Lightning Send Promising Forward Prospect Isaac Howard to Edmonton Oilers in Trade Deal

The Tampa Bay Lightning made a direct trade on Tuesday night, sending prospects to the Edmonton Oilers in exchange for future talent Sam O’Reilly. Isaac Howard informed the Lightning that he does not plan to sign with them and intends to become an unrestricted free agent in 2026 if not traded. Although Howard may not have as much NHL experience, the Lightning received solid value in O’Reilly, who is predicted to become a dependable NHL player when ready.

Shortly after the trade was revealed, the Oilers signed Howard to an entry-level contract. Howard was initially expected to return to Michigan for the 2025-26 season, but following the contract signing, he will turn professional. He ended the 2024-25 season with an impressive 26 goals and 52 points over 37 games, giving him a strong chance to secure a spot on the Oilers’ main roster during training camp.

O’Reilly proved to be a valuable acquisition for the Lightning after scoring 28 goals and 71 points in 62 games during the 2024-25 season with the London Knights in the OHL. He is set to return to the Knights for another season. Howard was also a notable trade target for the Pittsburgh Penguins, though they were unlikely to engage in a high-cost trade for him again this year.

Fan Take: This trade highlights the strategic moves NHL teams make to secure promising young talent and avoid losing players to free agency. For hockey fans, it emphasizes the dynamic nature of team-building and the importance of nurturing future stars to keep the sport competitive and exciting.
