WNBA legend Candace Parker, who underwent 14 surgeries during her impressive 16-season career, recently shared her journey in her memoir, “The Can Do Mindset,” released in early June. The two-time league MVP opens up about the challenges she faced, aiming to inspire readers to build resilience and follow their passions.

Parker has been actively promoting her book, with a recent appearance on “Jimmy Kimmel Live,” where she discussed the many surgeries and setbacks she endured throughout her career. Despite the difficulties, she expressed immense pride in overcoming adversity and reaching the pinnacle of her sport.

“I am very grateful for the experience of learning who I am,” Parker said. She highlighted how adversity shaped her character and fueled her love for the game, adding, “I’m proud to have navigated all the injuries and challenges that come with playing basketball.”

Honoring her remarkable legacy, the Los Angeles Sparks retired her number 3 jersey, a gesture that prevents any future Sparks players from wearing the number. On August 25th, the Chicago Sky will also retire her jersey number, making her one of the rare athletes to have their number retired by two different franchises within a short span.

This story was first reported by Athlon Sports on July 10, 2025.

Fan Take: Candace Parker’s story of perseverance and success is a powerful inspiration for WNBA fans and players alike, highlighting the strength and determination required to thrive in professional sports. Her dual jersey retirements not only celebrate her extraordinary impact but also elevate the visibility and respect for women’s basketball, signaling its growing prominence and legacy.
