The new Belmont Park grandstand is currently being built, which has led New York racing enthusiasts to turn their attention to several notable events like the Finger Lakes races, Aquid Bridge Tournament, Big A Summer and Fall tournaments, and Belmont Stakes at Big A. While the Belmont Stakes remains a highlight, Saratoga’s summer racing festival spans 40 days, offering a packed schedule of exciting competitions.

Have you marked your calendar? Key dates include the Diana Stakes on July 12, the Coaching Club American Oaks and Vanderbilt Stakes on July 19, and the Gym Dandy Stakes on July 26. August brings even more action with the Whitney and Forster Durbe races on the 2nd, the Sword Dancer on the 9th, Alabama Stakes on the 16th, and the Travers Day on August 23 featuring five Grade 1 races including the Forego and personal signs. The Spinaway is set for August 30, followed by the Jockey Club Gold Cup on August 31, and the finale on Labor Day, September 1.

The races primarily focus on some of the finest horses, including Preakness winner Sovereignty, who might challenge contenders at the Travers Stakes, and notable horses like MindFrame, Fierceness, Sierra Leone, White Abarrio, and SkippylongStocking expected at the Whitney. Horse of the Year 2024, Thorpedo Anna, aims to reclaim glory after a May defeat to Raging Sea.

Chad Brown has dominated the 2024 tournaments with 45 wins, far outpacing rivals Todd Pletcher and Mike Maker who follow with 22. Linda Rice and Bill Mott close the top five trainers, the latter boasting a high win rate of 28.3%. Jockey Irad Ortiz Jr. made headlines with 52 wins last summer, breaking records for most stakes victories (18) and rated stakes wins (14) at Saratoga. Other jockeys like Luis Saez, Junior Alvarado, Manny Franco, Dylan Davis, and Jose Ortiz are also expected to compete fiercely.

Brown excels particularly on turf, with 26 of his wins last summer on grass—three times more than any other trainer. This year, many promising 2-year-olds will debut, including Browns’ top prospects and Mark Cass’s talented runners. Notably, Ewing, son of Knicks Go trained by Cass, made an impressive debut July 5 and could appear again late in the tournament.

Obstacle races remain popular, with the AP Smithwick Memorial on July 23 and the Jonathan Sheppard Memorial on August 20. Special merchandise days this summer include T-shirts on July 11, Hawaiian shirts on July 20, blankets on July 25, pennants on August 8, tote bags on August 22, and Saratoga quarter-zip sweatshirts on August 31.

Despite hopes for a stronger season, recent years have been challenging due to weather and schedule changes; the 40-day meet was cut to 39 days in 2024, and many turf races were shifted to dirt due to rain. Fans endured wet conditions during Belmont Stakes day on June 7 at Saratoga.

Fox Sports provides exclusive Saratoga coverage, and several experts like Greg Wolf, Laffe Pinkai, Andy Selling, and others offer picks to help fans navigate the competition. The racing action kicks off at 1:10 pm, promising thrilling finishes and unforgettable moments.

Fan Take: This update is crucial for horse racing fans as it highlights the shifting landscape of premier New York races amid construction and changing weather patterns, emphasizing the resilience and excitement of the sport. With elite trainers, record-breaking jockeys, and promising young horses competing, this season could define the future trajectory of American thoroughbred racing.
