Jordan Henderson has been linked to his return to Sunderland this summer, how much is it possible?

The former Blackcats midfielder officially ended his contract with Ajax on Wednesday, a year ago before it expired, and England International plans to change the club for a third time in 24 months if he signs the current transfer window.

Since he became a free agent, there has been no shortage of reports on his 35-year-old’s future, but some of them seem to contradict each other.

What’s the latest in Henderson and Sunderland?

On Wednesday evening, Portuguese outlet O Jogo reported that Henderson was opposed to a reunion with former Ajax boss Frances Cofalioli at FC Porto.

The outlet claims that the veteran midfielder will return to Sunderland after 14 years away from the Stadium of Light instead, but Wearside sources show that it is not.

According to Sunderland Echo, the former Liverpool captain is not a target for the Black Cat’s live transfer, and his return to his hometown club is considered “highly unlikely,” with his stance “not expected to change at this stage.”

Sunderland isn’t just about reclaiming Henderson for sentiment

Regis Le Bliss’s side is set to close the signature of Simon Adintra, who has pending successful medical care, but it remains unclear whether Henderson will pass through the door and follow the Koiboria winger.

Returning to the Summer Light Stadium, where Sunderland ended his eight-year asylum from Top Flight, Kuroneko appears to be taking a practical stance in the transfer market, given the age profile of the new signature.

Aside from Reniro Mandava’s opportunistic acquisition at freedom, all other rookies so far are under 21 years old. The 23-year-old Adingra was not a wild divergence from the club’s market strategy.

As romantic as Henderson’s return, it appears that the promoted outfit cannot lead to relocation activities unless the hierarchy executes Volte’s face and determines that England International can offer it to the Lubris side.

The 35-year-old may still finish his playing day at Sunderland, but it appears doubtful that his career wheels will be a perfect yen in 2025.
