AC Milan’s upcoming match against Serie A rivals Como may become the first significant Europa League game to be held outside Italy, following the Italian Football Federation (FIGC)’s recent decision to approve the event in Perth, Australia.

This change in location is driven by logistical needs rather than commercial interests, as the famous San Siro Stadium will be occupied for the Milan Cortina Winter Olympics’ opening ceremony on February 6th.

This proposal marks a significant venture for European football, diverging from past denials for playing domestic league matches abroad.

Figu stated, “The Federal Council has shown support for Legga Serie A’s request to hold Milan como in Perth.” He added that this represents a momentous step towards Serie A matches being played internationally.

Nevertheless, the FIGC cautioned that “complex authorization procedures” will necessitate formal approvals from Football Australia, UEFA, the Asian Football Confederation, and FIFA before these milestone fixtures can take place.

Fan Take: This potential match in Australia could open the floodgates for more international fixtures, giving fans worldwide the chance to experience European football firsthand. Additionally, it emphasizes the sport’s growing global appeal, which can foster a broader fan base and enhance the vibrancy of international soccer.
