TORONTO (AP) — The Canadian Horse of the Year, Ofurihan, was euthanized on Thursday. During a recent Grade 2 Highlander race at Woodbine Racecourse, Patch-Ouhan, ridden by Sofia Vibbs, narrowly defeated my boy prince. However, after the race, Patch Olihan was pulled up and transported for further evaluation.

A veterinarian discovered soft tissue damage in the horse. According to a statement from Woodbine, owner and breeder Frank Di Guillio confirmed that Ofurihan’s condition had worsened. “After continuous consultations with our veterinarians and surgeons, it was concluded that surgery was not a feasible option to ensure a good quality of life,” said Di Guillio. “Like many fans, we deeply miss seeing him compete.”

Di Guillio added, “Ofurihan was an exceptional horse, both in character and spirit. He loved racing, possessed remarkable heart and determination, and was incredibly genuine.” The 5-year-old Ontario-bred horse achieved 13 wins and one second-place finish in 16 starts.

Fan Take: The loss of Ofurihan is deeply felt within the horse racing community because he was a symbol of passion and perseverance. His spirit and talent inspired many fans and his absence leaves a gap that highlights the importance of nurturing future stars for the sport’s continued excitement and growth.
