Tulsa Football Coach Trelam qualifies for the Oklahoma Golf State Amateur Championship

It’s a rare quiet season for college football coaches, a short window between official visits when the grind pauses and fall camp. It was hired during the dead period and August practice is still a few weeks apart, so some coaches are sneaking in for a few rounds – Probably not that much Auburn’s Hugh Freeze – Tip Handicap. Or in Tulsa’s freshman coach Trelam, who is a qualifier for the Oklahoma Golf Association amateur championship.

The 35-year-old made a 3-over 75 card in Thursday’s qualifying at the club at Broken Arrow Forestridge, and quickly finished off at the cut line to win one of the final spots. The top 33 players and bonds advanced to the main attraction of the Oklahoma Golf Association State Amateur. This is scheduled for July 21-24 at Cedar Ridge Country Club in Broken Arrow.

Lamb had two birdies, three bogeys and double bogeys in the round.

“The first time I played,” Lamb told Kotov’s Jeremy Poplin. “It’s a bit quirky. There are three or four holes that will quickly creep up at you. Issue 1 is really difficult. (Nos.) 13 and 14 are really difficult. I made a double at 14. I made a bogey at 13.

“It’s a fun course. It’s hot here today. It’s 96 degrees. I went to workout this morning at 6:30.

Lamb was named Tulsa coach in December 2024 for a season in East Tennessee and four years at Gardner Web. He owns a 27-25 record as FCS head coach. He also spent seven seasons as an offensive assistant – four at Mercer, three at Tennessee Tech, three at his alma mater – following his playing career.

Lamb designed a rapid transformation at Gardner Web, leading the program to its first Big South title since 2003 and its first FCS playoff victory in 2022.

In his only season in East Tennessee, Lamb ended his team’s three to eight consecutive campaigns, earning four of five losses determined by single digits.

He has been performing in just two bowls over the past eight years, inheriting the Tulsa program, which comes out of three consecutive loss seasons.
