The Future of Jeannie Buss and the Lakers: An Uncertain Horizon

Weeks after Johnny Bass agreed to sell a majority stake in the Los Angeles Lakers to Mark Walter, the team’s long-term outlook remains unclear. Conflicting reports have surfaced regarding Jeanie Bass’s tenure as Lakers governor—while one report suggests she will hold the role for at least five years as part of the Bass family’s agreement with Walter, another indicates her term ends in 2030 for each front office position. Initially, when the Bass family announced the sale in June, it was understood Jeanie would stay on as governor, but no timeline was provided.

Walter’s choice to keep Jeanie Bass in the governor role after the sale is not unusual; similar arrangements have been made before. For example, after selling a majority stake in the Dallas Mavericks in 2023, Mark Cuban remained governor until Patrick Dumont took over after the 2023-24 season. The Boston Celtics have also allowed former owner WYC Grousbeck to remain governor until 2028. However, the Bass family and Walter share a prior working relationship, which differentiates this situation. Walter teamed up with Todd Boley in 2021 to purchase a 27% stake in the Lakers, and the Bass family gave Walter the first right to buy the team when selling the majority stake.

Walter is purchasing the Lakers at a $10 billion valuation, marking the most expensive sports franchise acquisition in history. He has been part of the Los Angeles Dodgers ownership group since 2012 and is the main owner of Andretti Global as well as the WNBA’s Los Angeles Sparks.

Since Walter agreed to buy the Lakers, there have been notable developments, especially around LeBron James’s future. James has a $52 million player option for the 2025-26 season but plans to “monitor” the offseason according to his agent, Rich Paul. Despite sparking trade rumors, James’s camp has asked the Lakers to strengthen their roster in hopes of winning the title in 2025-26. The Lakers have signed center DeAndre Ayton to a one-year deal, re-signed Jay Claravia and Jackson Hayes, while forward Dorian Finney-Smith became a free agent signing with the Houston Rockets.

Luka Dončić, acquired in a major trade with the Mavericks, is also expected to negotiate an extension soon. Dončić expressed enthusiasm about the Lakers’ future, showing appreciation for Jeanie Bass and Mark Walter, and looks forward to working with them to win a championship.

Fan Take: This transition in Lakers ownership underscores a pivotal moment for one of the NBA’s most iconic franchises. Maintaining leadership continuity while bringing in new ownership could set the stage for sustained success, making the next few seasons especially exciting for basketball fans worldwide.
