The Grand Rapids Griffins, the AHL affiliate of the Detroit Red Wings, have signed defenseman Alex Kanno Kleippert to a one-year contract. This move, announced by Griffins GM Shawn Hokov, aims to bolster the team’s roster as they look to build on a promising 2024-25 season.

At 24 years old, Kanno Kleippert joins the Griffins following a standout year with the Bakersfield Condors. As the only professional ice hockey player from Thailand, he brings a unique story and a strong desire to reach the NHL while representing his country with pride. Last season, he played a career-high 59 games, tallied 11 points (4 goals, 7 assists), collected 93 penalty minutes, and held a minus-one rating. Known for his physical play and leadership abilities, Kleippert experienced career-best numbers across the board.

Originally drafted in the sixth round by the Washington Capitals in 2018, Kanno Kleippert spent his first three professional years with the Abbotsford Canucks. There, he appeared in 123 regular-season games, scoring 12 points (1 goal, 11 assists) with a +10 rating, and participated in two playoff games in 2023, contributing an assist.

During his junior career with the Vancouver Giants in the Western Hockey League, where he was team captain, Kleippert was a reliable defensive presence. He compiled 83 points along with 240 penalty minutes and a +47 rating in 219 games. His postseason performances were notable, with 12 points in 28 playoff games and a key role in the Giants’ run to the league finals in 2019, where he ranked fourth among WHL defensemen in playoff scoring.

This signing comes as the Griffins prepare for the upcoming season after a solid 2023-24 campaign under coach Dan Watson. The team finished third in the Central Division with a 37-29-4 record and reached the division semifinals in the Calder Cup playoffs, where they were swept by the Texas Stars. Strengthening their defensive lineup, especially with a player like Kanno Kleippert who mixes toughness and depth, supports the team’s ambition for deeper playoff runs and the development of talented prospects within the Detroit Red Wings organization.

Celebrating their 30th season and 25 years in the AHL, the Griffins are focused on combining grit and leadership to continue their competitive growth.

Fan Take: This signing is a fascinating blend of international talent and grit that reflects hockey’s growing global reach. For fans, Kleippert’s journey from Thailand to the AHL symbolizes how the sport continues to diversify and offers exciting new storylines on and off the ice.
