Cooper Flag’s First Appearance Ranks as ESPN’s Fourth Most-Watched Summer League Event

Cooper Flag has already made a name for himself in the NBA, at least in terms of viewership. The first overall pick in the 2025 NBA Draft made his Summer League debut on Thursday, drawing an average of 955,000 viewers according to Nielsen ratings, as announced by ESPN on Friday. This marks the fourth-highest viewership in Summer League history.

The Dallas Mavericks versus Los Angeles Lakers game peaked at 1.12 million viewers, reflecting a 167% average increase in league viewership compared to last summer.

Here are the three games with higher viewership than Flag’s debut and the players involved:

  1. Zion Williamson vs. RJ Barrett in 2019, 1.61 million
  2. Victor Wembanyama vs. Brandon Miller in 2023, 1.39 million
  3. Lonzo Ball vs. Jayson Tatum in 2017, 1.1 million
  4. Cooper Flag vs. Bronnie James in 2025, 955,000

Nielsen ratings for Summer League games have become more common in recent years; for example, LeBron James’ 2003 Summer League debut aired on NBA TV but was not rated by Nielsen at the time.

Flag entered the NBA amid excitement reminiscent of the hype surrounding LeBron James’ arrival. Although his performance on Thursday was inconsistent, with some standout moments, he finished the game scoreless in the second half, scoring 5 of his 21 points early on.

The Mavericks narrowly defeated the Lakers 87-85. Bronnie James also went scoreless in the second half, finishing with eight points.

Flag’s next game will be against the San Antonio Spurs and their No. 2 pick, Dylan Harper, on Saturday. However, he may have limited time in the Summer League as the Mavericks clearly see him as a crucial part of their playoff roster and plan to conserve his energy.

Fan Take: Cooper Flag’s massive Summer League viewership signals a strong new generation of NBA talent that fans are eager to watch. This excitement could boost the league’s popularity and usher in fresh rivalries and storylines that will captivate basketball audiences for years to come.
