Bayer Leverkusen has officially signed US International Malik Tillman from PSV Eindhoven, activating his release clause of 35 million euros this Saturday, and it’s clear why they made this move.

Tillman had an outstanding 2024-25 season in the Netherlands, capping it off as one of the standout players for the US men’s national team during the Gold Cup final. He’s not only in excellent form but also fits into a transitioning team that needs creative players.

What role will Tillman play at Leverkusen? Why was he chosen? And is the reigning Bundesliga Champion the right fit for one of USMNT’s most promising talents? ESPN’s Constantine Eckner and Cesar Hernandez delve into Tillman’s return to Germany.

Wirtz Out, Tillman In

Leverkusen is undergoing significant changes this summer. Fan-favorite manager Xabi Alonso has left for Real Madrid, replaced by Erik Ten Hag. Meanwhile, star German international Florian Wirtz has departed for Liverpool in a deal worth £100 million (with an additional £16 million in add-ons), prompting the club to bring in Tillman as a crucial asset to their offense.

Ten Hag recently consulted PSV Manager Peter Bosz about Leverkusen; Bosz was head coach there from late 2018 until 2021, and they likely discussed Tillman during their conversation.

Last season, Tillman was undeniably the standout player for PSV. When he faced an ankle injury towards the end of the Eredivisie season, PSV dropped 10 points to Ajax but managed to reclaim their position thanks to his performance.

Leverkusen has been aware of Tillman for some time. This isn’t surprising, given his history at Bayern Munich Academy. After struggling for playtime with Bayern and subsequent loans to Rangers and PSV, he made a permanent move to the Dutch club in 2024 for a modest fee of 12 million euros. With this sale to Leverkusen, PSV almost tripled their investment in him.

The Bundesliga club knew that several teams, including some from the Premier League, had started tracking Tillman closely, showcasing his talent. His ability to charge into the penalty area from midfield particularly caught Leverkusen’s attention.

While both Tillman and Wirtz are smaller players, they boast explosiveness in attack. Leverkusen does not view Tillman as a direct replacement for Wirtz, but recognizes that he still possesses technical skills and may add a different dynamic to their offense.

Tillman envisions himself in a role similar to that of Paul Pogba, who thrives as a No. 8 rather than a No. 10, though he has expressed that his preferred position is the latter.

“When people ask about my favorite position, it’s definitely 10,” Tillman shared with a German football magazine a year back. “Of course, I’ve also played deeper on the left since I’m quite versatile.”

Tillman is expected to be an immediate starter under Ten Hag. The fact that he’s a record-signing for Leverkusen raises significant expectations for the 23-year-old.

Despite this pressure, Tillman himself acknowledges that he won’t merely step into Wirtz’s shoes. Their playing styles and personalities are quite different; Wirtz was a natural leader even at a young age, while Tillman is more reserved, letting his play do the talking. – Eckner

World Cup Year Gamble?

The dynamic midfielder, who dazzled in his offensive role with three goals and two assists during the Gold Cup, showcased his finesse and flair that propelled his team to a second-place finish. By the end of the tournament, Tillman had transformed from a promising player to a key figure on the potential Best XI roster for the USMNT.

This leads some American fans to question the timing of a midfielder’s transition just a year ahead of the World Cup.

Can Tillman thrive in the Bundesliga? The answer is definitely yes.

Returning to a league with a rich culture for German-Americans, where he has some prior experience, should help, and his confidence is at an all-time high after the Gold Cup.

However, this move poses its risks.

Numerous players have excelled in the Eredivisie but faltered when entering a more competitive European league. Moreover, during the Gold Cup final, Tillman struggled against Mexico, and his influence against a well-organized Saudi Arabia in the group stage was minimal.

For a player with such high potential, the challenge at the club level during the 2025-26 season will be significant. It remains to be seen whether his time at Leverkusen will offer him the growth he needs before next summer or whether it will turn into a missed opportunity for a player whose stock remains high with USMNT. – Hernandez

Fan Take: This signing is crucial for both Tillman’s career and the growth of American soccer. His performance in a top-tier league like the Bundesliga could bridge the gap for US players and elevate the national team’s competitiveness on the world stage.
