Miles Turner Joins the Bucks: “The Goal Was Staying Competitive Until the Finish”

Las Vegas – The signing of Miles Turner by the Bucks was the most unexpected move of the NBA offseason. Turner was anticipated to stay in Indiana, especially after their strong playoff run, with Milwaukee thought to lack the salary cap space to pursue him. Although the Pacers’ management decided to pay the luxury tax and offered Turner a lowball contract, the Bucks made a bold move by parting ways with Damian Lillard, creating enough cap space to secure Turner’s services.

For Turner, joining the Bucks was driven more by the desire to remain competitive rather than financial gain. “At the end of the day, competitiveness was the key,” Turner explained during a press conference in Las Vegas on Friday. “Two years ago, the Pacers reached the Eastern Conference Finals, and last year we made it to the NBA Finals. Being part of that changed how this league views winning basketball.”

Turner sought a salary that matched other high-caliber centers like Isaiah Hartenstein, who commands around $29 million annually, Jarrett Allen with $30 million, and Nick Claxton at $24.3 million. The Bucks responded with a four-year, $107 million contract.

Last season, Turner averaged 15.6 points per game while shooting 39.6% from beyond the arc, adding 6.5 rebounds and 2 blocks each game.

From Milwaukee’s perspective, Turner is a notable upgrade compared to the current stage of Brook Lopez’s career. For Turner, the chance to team up with Giannis Antetokounmpo rather than compete against him was a major factor. “I’m tired of protecting my shoulders and elbows against him,” Turner joked. “Giannis is a generational talent and one of the best to ever play the game. I’m excited to learn from him in the coming weeks; his impact goes beyond the stats.”

Turner also believes Milwaukee has a strong chance to rise in the Eastern Conference next season. “I respect how dedicated the roster is—Gary Trent and Bobby Portis just re-signed. There’s a solid culture here.”

One potential obstacle to the Bucks’ championship aspirations could have been Antetokounmpo’s trade demands. However, that appears unlikely now. Antetokounmpo has stated he will “probably” remain with Milwaukee. Bucks coach Dock Rivers, present alongside Turner, also dismissed trade rumors. “Giannis came to me the day after the season ended, and we were already discussing next season plans. There’s a lot of speculation outside Milwaukee, but here, Giannis loves it. We love him too, and this relationship is strong. We are determined to win next year.”

Having Turner on the roster strengthens Milwaukee’s pursuit of victory.

Fan Take: Miles Turner’s signing signals a thrilling shift in the NBA landscape, potentially forming a dominant Bucks squad built around Giannis. For basketball fans, this move promises intensified competition in the Eastern Conference and could reshape the narrative around what it takes to build a championship contender.
