Fred VanVliet had an impressive summer, securing a lucrative two-year, $50 million contract with the talent-rich Houston Rockets. In addition, he was appointed as the new president of the National Basketball Players Association (NBPA), the players’ union.

VanVliet expressed his honor at being chosen by his fellow players to lead the NBPA. He emphasized his commitment to advocating for the interests of all members with passion, respect, and dedication, drawing from his extensive NBA experience and understanding of the challenges players face.

He will succeed CJ McCollum, who guided the NBPA through the most recent Collective Bargaining Agreement negotiations with the league. VanVliet is seen as a seasoned and respected leader, capable of standing strong in dealings with the league whenever necessary.

Alongside VanVliet, the rest of the NBPA board was also announced:
– First Vice President: Grant Williams
– Secretary of Accounting: Mason Plumlee
– Vice Presidents: Jalen Brown, Jackson Jr., Donovan Mitchell, Garrett Temple, Karl-Anthony Towns, Gabe Vincent

Fan Take: This leadership change in the NBPA is significant because it empowers a veteran like VanVliet who truly understands the players’ perspectives. His presidency could strengthen player unity and influence, potentially leading to better conditions and growth opportunities across the NBA.
