Dana White Honors Dustin Poirier, Declaring UFC 318 Was Made Just for Him

Dana White highlighted that the entire UFC 318 pay-per-view event was essentially a tribute to Dustin Poirier’s remarkable career. The former interim champion will be making his final UFC appearance next Saturday in his home state of Louisiana, facing Max Holloway for the BMF title. Poirier, who has been a prominent figure in the sport for years, is set to conclude his career where it all began — receiving ample support from his home crowd in New Orleans.

White explained that, these days, most UFC pay-per-views outside major hubs like Las Vegas or Madison Square Garden happen due to local tourism boards funding the events. However, New Orleans was chosen specifically to honor Poirier with a proper send-off near his roots. Speaking after UFC Nashville, White expressed deep admiration for Poirier, noting that many of his recent opponents have been former world champions, underscoring the legendary level of his career.

White further added in an interview with Louisiana’s WDSU that Dustin Poirier has become a global star for the UFC and praised his achievements. Though Poirier hails from Lafayette, Louisiana – a bit farther from New Orleans – he’ll still enjoy strong home-state support in his upcoming fight. Months before the event was confirmed, Poirier shared how meaningful it was to compete in Louisiana again, symbolically putting on gloves where his journey in the sport began nearly two decades ago.

Fan Take: This tribute fight not only honors Poirier’s legacy but also highlights the UFC’s recognition of fighter loyalty and hometown pride. It’s a powerful moment for fighting fans as it celebrates a true warrior’s journey and elevates the sport’s connection to its grassroots.
