Flyers’ Porter Merton: From 2026 Giant Disappointment to Calder Trophy Champion?

Philadelphia Flyers’ top prospect Porter Martone is considered a significant long shot to win the 2026 Calder Trophy, regardless of whether he makes it to the NHL. According to Fanduel Sportsbook, Martone, who was the 6th overall pick in 2025, has extremely long odds of +30,000 to win the award, equating to roughly a 0.0033% chance. Montreal Canadiens’ young star is currently the favorite at +270, followed by San Jose’s second overall pick Michael Misa and Edmonton’s promising forward Ike Howard both at +1200. Notably, the 2025 first overall pick Matthew Schaefer was not included in the betting odds, possibly due to an administrative oversight.

Other Flyers prospects, Maxim Shabanov and James Hagens, who could have also contended for rookie honors, are listed at +2300 and +3000 respectively. Martone is expected to head to the NCAA, alongside Michigan State hopeful Shane Vanthagi. Philadelphia’s 2024 first-round pick, center Jett Luchanko, shares the same long odds of +30,000, and both young players face uncertain routes to NHL roster spots, though roster changes due to injuries or performance could open doors. The Flyers themselves are ranked third in odds to win the Metropolitan Division this season, trailing Columbus (+2200) and Pittsburgh (+8500), with the New York Islanders also close at +1700.

Interestingly, the Flyers reportedly declined a trade offer from the Islanders because they were set on selecting Martone with their sixth overall pick. Besides the top teams, others in the race have odds of +650 or higher. Fans looking to bet on the Stanley Cup may find decent value at the Flyers’ +8,000 odds, where Martone could potentially play a pivotal role if the team advances far.

Fan Take: This news highlights the high expectations and challenges facing young Flyers prospects like Porter Martone, showing how tough it is to make an immediate impact in the NHL.
