Former Devils’ First-Round Picks Traded to Canucks in Exciting Deal

Chase Stillman, previously a first-round draft pick by the New Jersey Devils, is on the move once again. The Vancouver Canucks have announced acquiring Stillman as their fourth pick in the 2027 NHL draft from the Pittsburgh Penguins in exchange for goaltender Artūrs Šilovs.

Stillman was initially traded to the Penguins by the Devils just four months ago as part of the deal that brought Cody Glass to New Jersey. Now, after a short tenure with Pittsburgh, Stillman is set to join the Canucks.

At 22 years old, Stillman is aiming to progress in his career and make his NHL debut, which he has yet to achieve. He began his American Hockey League (AHL) journey with the Utica Comets, where during the 2023-24 season in 54 games, he tallied 14 goals, 24 points, 72 penalty minutes, and had a minus-2 rating. In the 46 games played for the Comets in the 2024-25 season before his trade, he recorded three goals, nine points, and a minus-14 rating.

It will be intriguing to see how much influence Stillman can exert with the Canucks moving forward.

Meanwhile, the New Jersey Devils are counting on forward Dawson Mercer, 23, to be a key player next season, hoping he can deliver a much-needed strong performance in 2025-26.

Fan Take: This trade highlights how teams are actively reshaping futures, giving promising young players like Stillman new opportunities to prove themselves. For hockey fans, it signals an exciting potential shift in player dynamics and team strategies, reflecting the constantly evolving nature of the sport.
