Nuggets Acquire Center Jonas Vallanche from Kings, Despite His Desire to Play Overseas

Veteran center Jonas Valančiūnas has officially joined the Denver Nuggets following a trade with the Sacramento Kings involving Dario Šarić. Despite having two years left on his $20.3 million contract, Valančiūnas reportedly received an offer from Panathinaikos in Greece valued at $36 million over three years, close to his hometown. This move signals the Nuggets’ intention to keep Valančiūnas on the roster.

Last season, Valančiūnas appeared in 81 games for the Washington Wizards and Sacramento Kings, starting in 21, and averaged 10.4 points, 7.7 rebounds, and 2.0 assists per game. With Denver, he will serve as a backup behind three-time NBA MVP Nikola Jokić. Although Valančiūnas might prefer a larger role overseas, this trade suggests he will continue his NBA career.

The 33-year-old Lithuanian star is entering his 14th NBA season after beginning professionally with Euroleague’s Lietuvos Rytas in 2010-11. He has career averages of 13.1 points, 9.3 rebounds, and 1.4 assists across 937 games. His addition bolsters Denver’s bench depth as they strive for their second NBA championship in four years.

Fan Take: This trade is significant because it adds a seasoned, reliable big man to an already strong Nuggets roster, potentially increasing their championship chances. Basketball fans should watch how Valančiūnas’ presence impacts Denver’s frontcourt dynamics and their pursuit of another NBA title.
