Michael Johnson is widely regarded as a top lightweight fighter in MMA when he’s at his best. Known as “The Threat,” he has notable wins over Dustin Poirier, Tony Ferguson, and Edson Barboza. Johnson gave Justin Gaethje a tough fight during his UFC debut in July 2017. Despite this, Johnson’s 23-19 record reflects that the 39-year-old hasn’t fully realized his superstar potential.

Khabib Nurmagomedov faced one of his toughest UFC challenges at UFC 148 in July 2012, where despite being seen as the underdog against Gleison Tibau, the bout ended in a controversial unanimous decision win for Nurmagomedov, sparking debate among MMA fans to this day. Johnson made Tibau’s job much harder at UFC 168 in December 2013 by landing a powerful left punch that nearly ended the fight. Nurmagomedov later avenged the earlier tough match by defeating Johnson at UFC 205 in November 2016 with a third-round submission, maintaining his undefeated record.

During that fight, Nurmagomedov told Johnson to “stop” as he dominated on the ground, but Johnson revealed eight years later that his actual response was a defiant “F-you,” showing his resilience and refusal to quit despite the tough bout. Johnson, set to fight Daniel Zellhuber at UFC 318, remains a fighter who keeps pushing forward regardless of setbacks.

Fan Take: This story highlights the grit and determination that define MMA, showing how fighters like Johnson, despite setbacks and ups and downs, continue to compete at the highest level. It also reminds fans of the intense rivalries and memorable moments that shape the sport, keeping the legacy of fighters like Nurmagomedov and Johnson alive in MMA history.
