Texans QB CJ Stroud Gears Up to Boost Strength and Speed

DJ Bien-Aime of ESPN reports on Houston Texans quarterback CJ Stroud’s offseason efforts to enhance his physical condition as he enters his third NFL season. Stroud focused on reducing body fat, increasing speed and strength, and improving pocket mobility, all aimed at elevating his performance on the field. Despite the added workload causing some shoulder discomfort this spring, Stroud viewed the changes as necessary, especially after last season saw a slight drop in his passing yards to 3,727 and an increase in interceptions to 12. His second-year stats included 20 touchdowns, and he was recognized as an offensive rookie and professional bowler, finishing with 4,108 passing yards and 23 touchdowns.

Stroud put in extra work with assistant strength coach Clint Martin and expressed satisfaction with his progress, emphasizing the balance of risk and reward in training. Houston Texans’ head coach DeMeco Ryan and new offensive coordinator Nick Caley are optimistic that the adjustments and improved communication will help the team surpass previous hurdles. Last season, offensive struggles were notable, with the Texans ranking 22nd in yards per game and 19th in points. Stroud faced significant pressure in the pocket, being hit and hurried frequently, which he aims to mitigate by utilizing his improved speed and agility.

In 2024, Stroud logged impressive scramble stats, including a 20-yard run at 19.7 mph and ranking in the top 30 for quarterback scrambles and rush yards. His scramble completion rate improved from 32% as a rookie to 49.1% last year, although turnovers increased slightly in these situations. Caley highlighted the intensive preparation work starting in the film room and stressed the importance of his partnership with Stroud for the Texans’ progress. Stroud expressed gratitude for the offseason improvements and emphasized the importance of his ongoing training as the team aims to make a significant impact in the AFC.
