Brooke Lopez Reflects on a Special Homecoming as He Joins the Clippers

Brook Lopez has never played for the Clippers, but his signing with the team this summer feels like a homecoming due to his Southern California roots and various ties to the franchise. The connection began with Team President Lawrence Frank, who coached Lopez with the New Jersey Nets in 2008, making this a meaningful moment for him.

Lopez was a sought-after free agent, linked to teams like the Lakers, Rockets, and others. However, he ultimately agreed to a two-year, $17.9 million deal to serve as a backup center for the Clippers behind Ivica Zubac. Lopez expressed excitement about joining a strong team with talented veterans and promising young players.

One significant link between Lopez and the Clippers is his former Lakers teammate Ivica Zubac. Head coach Tyronn Lue favors a bigger lineup, often pairing Lopez with Zubac. Lopez believes they complement each other well, especially on defense and in dominating the paint, while also spreading the floor offensively to create opportunities.

Primarily a backup to Zubac, Lopez’s ability to shoot 37.3% from three-point range on 4.7 attempts per game last season means he will have diverse roles in the team’s lineups. He emphasized his versatility and eagerness to contribute both offensively and defensively to help the team win.

Lopez also anticipates a quick chemistry with teammate James Harden, understanding that many of his scoring opportunities will come from pick-and-roll plays with Harden. Additionally, he looks forward to mentoring younger players like Yannick Conan Niederhauser, a promising 6’10” center from Switzerland.

Having played alongside great players like Kevin Garnett, Paul Pierce, Giannis Antetokounmpo, and Vince Carter, Lopez values the impact veteran mentorship had on his career and is eager to offer the same guidance to the Clippers’ young talent.

Returning to Southern California, closer to home and Disneyland, Lopez finds it remarkable how far the Clippers have come as an organization. The team views his addition as a valuable piece of their roster, marking a homecoming for the native Californian.

Fan Take: Brook Lopez’s signing is an exciting development for Clippers fans, blending experience, skill, and leadership. His versatility and mentorship could be pivotal in elevating the team’s dynamics and success, making this a promising chapter for both Lopez and the franchise.
