Jets Wide Receiver Garrett Wilson Secures $130 Million, 4-Year Contract Extension

New York Jets wide receiver Garrett Wilson, who seemed uncertain about his future with the team at the end of last season, has now signed a four-year, $130 million contract extension, making him one of the highest-paid receivers in the NFL. The deal comes with $90 million guaranteed, ranking as the fourth-largest guarantee for a wide receiver. Wilson’s contract is historic as he’s the first receiver to average $31 million per year after just three seasons, with his average of $32.5 million making it the fifth highest among NFL wideouts.

Drafted 10th overall in 2022, Wilson still had two years remaining on his rookie deal, including a fifth-year option in 2026 guaranteed for $16.8 million. For the Jets, securing key players like Wilson is vital not just for immediate performance but to build stability through the 2030 season. They are also in talks to extend cornerback Sauce Gardner, a 2022 first-round pick as well.

This contract marks the first time the Jets have extended a former first-round pick within three seasons under the NFL’s current financial system, implemented in 2011. Previously, defensive tackle Quinnen Williams waited four years for an extension. The current Jets leadership, headed by manager Aaron Glenn and general manager Darren Moogie, prioritizes retaining top young talent early, acknowledging past failures in this area.

Wilson recorded career highs last season with 101 receptions, 1,104 receiving yards, and seven touchdowns. However, his on-field demeanor and ambiguous statements about his future sparked rumors of dissatisfaction and possible trade requests. His attitude shifted after Aaron Glenn’s arrival, who assured Wilson he’d be utilized extensively, along with the change at quarterback, moving away from Aaron Rodgers, whose tenure was marked by a chilly relationship with Wilson.

Now, Wilson will catch passes from former Ohio State teammate Justin Fields, and both players are excited about their reunion. Approaching his 25th birthday, Wilson has the chance to make Jets history as the first player to have three straight 1,000-yard seasons since George Sauer in the late 1960s. He’s among an elite group of five players in NFL history to surpass 1,000 yards and 80 receptions in each of their first three seasons, joining stars like Ja’Marr Chase and Odell Beckham Jr.

Wilson’s achievements are even more impressive considering the Jets’ quarterback instability, having played with seven different quarterbacks since entering the league, including Rodgers, Zach Wilson, Joe Flacco, and others.

Fan Take: Garrett Wilson’s stunning contract extension signals the Jets’ commitment to building a future around their young stars, promising exciting on-field performances for fans. This move not only boosts Wilson’s career but highlights the evolving landscape of the NFL, where elite talents are quickly rewarded, potentially shifting team dynamics league-wide.
