Maple Leafs Struggle to Find Offensive Spark, Stuck with Rossi: Latest NHL Rumor Rundown

The Toronto Maple Leafs have been actively engaged in the trade scene this offseason. Last month, they traded Mitch Marner to the Vegas Golden Knights, managed by Nicholas Roy, and in return acquired left winger Matthias McKelli from the Utah Mammoth. More recently, they sent left winger Ryan Reeves to the San Jose Sharks along with defenseman Henry Srun.

Speculation continues around whether Maple Leafs GM Brad Treliving might make a bigger move to compensate for the loss of offensive power following Marner’s departure. SportsNet’s Luke Fox highlighted that while the Leafs have salary cap space to bring in another top-six winger, they lack valuable tradable assets such as first-round draft picks or highly sought-after prospects. Rumors have circulated about attempts to trade defensemen like Brandon Carlo and Morgan Rielly.

Rielly could be a bigger asset in trades but may resist a move. Carlo is easier to trade due to his agreement with an eight-team no-trade list, though he might not fit into a top-six forward role. Meanwhile, some Leafs fans are hopeful for a reunion with Nazem Kadri, now a center for the Calgary Flames. However, Hockey News’ David Alter doubts Calgary will part with their key center.

More practical options lie in free agency. Alter has noted the availability of versatile forward Jack Roslovich, who scored 22 goals and earned 39 points last season with the Carolina Hurricanes. Fox confirmed that the 28-year-old unrestricted free agent has been linked to the Leafs.

Turning to Minnesota, the contract stalemate between the Wild and center Marco Rossi shows no resolution yet. Rossi, 23, has finished his entry-level contract but lacks arbitration rights. According to Sarah McLellan of the Minneapolis Star Tribune, Wild GM Bill Guerin holds the advantage in negotiations. Both sides have exchanged offers, with the Wild proposing both short- and long-term deals.

Rossi can sign an offer sheet with rival teams, but Guerin has assured that Minnesota will match any offer. The Wild has over $10 million in cap space this season, and while Rossi is a promising center, it’s unlikely rival teams will offer more than $10 million. Trade talks could still happen; Rossi has been training consistently since last summer, fueling trade rumors. Nevertheless, Guerin remains confident Rossi will sign a new contract with the Wild.
