The 2025 golf season reached its final major, with the Open Championship taking part in the Royal Portrush in Northern Ireland for its 153rd play this week. The world’s oldest golf tournament has returned to Protterush for the first time in six years, with the claret jug set being awarded on the scene on the third Sunday.

Xander Schauffele will enter this year’s reigning champion golfer, but all eyes will focus on his hometown favourite Rory McIlroy, the world’s second-largest golfer. He has already won three tournaments this season. It was considered McIlroy to be a clear favourite entering the Royal Portrush, including locking up the first master to complete a career grand slam. Instead, following a brief struggle, McIlroy is second behind Scotty Scheffler on the odds board.

McIlroy’s incredible play at the Scotland Open last week may have served as a perfect adjustment for Ulsterman. Ulsterman wants to start a hot Thursday and hopes to leave just as early as the opening in 2019 was performed on his hometown coast. The winner of that year was Irishman Shane Lowry, McIlroy’s best friend of PGA Tour. He also welcomed the New Year, but it always seems to be alive when he returns to England for the tournament.

John Rahm comes in as the third overall favorite behind Schaeffler and McIlroy. He hasn’t won the Liv Golf yet, but Rahm forgot about his game after 2024. He claims a circle of winners and appears ready to add another feather to the cap with a claret jug on the mantle.

While participating in the Open Championship is definitely a memorable experience, it’s an incredible treat to be able to watch golf on one of the game’s most epic stages each year. cbssports.com is excited to bring open wall-to-wall coverage all week.

I’ll talk about it well. Here’s how you can see as many openings as possible between the present and Sunday: Stick to CBS Sports for live coverage throughout the final major of 2025.
