NASCAR Suspends Two Crew Members Over Codyware Loose Wheel Incident

Cody Ware was hoping for a smooth race at Sonoma Raceway following a terrifying crash at the Chicago Street Course the previous week, where a brake rotor failure caused his car to slam into the tire barrier at turn 6. Fortunately, Sonoma didn’t have such a severe incident, but trouble struck again on the final lap when Ware’s car lost its right wheel. Despite the wheel detaching, Ware managed to get the No. 51 Rick Ware Racing Ford back to the pits and finished 34th out of 37, marking his poorest result since Bristol in April.

Due to the loose wheel incident, NASCAR penalized Rick Ware Racing, suspending their rear tire changers Marquill Osborne and Jack Mandequan Hampton for two races. The only other penalties from the weekend were for unsecured lug nuts in the Xfinity series, affecting Austin Hill’s No. 21 Richard Childress Racing Chevrolet, Dean Thompson’s No. 26 Sam Hunt Racing Toyota, and Brennan Poole’s No. 44 Alpha Prime Racing Chevrolet.

Fan Take: This news highlights the critical importance of safety and precision in NASCAR pit crews, where even minor mistakes can have serious consequences on performance and safety. Keeping teams accountable ensures racing stays competitive and secure, which is vital for the sport’s credibility and fan confidence.
