NEW YORK – Defending champions Jannik Sinner and Aryna Sabalenka both top the tennis rankings and led the 10 former US Open winners who were on the entry list for this year’s tournament announced Tuesday.

The field includes 18 past Grand Slam singles champions, the American Tennis Association said.

Direct entry to the final major tournaments of the tennis season was based on rankings up to July 14th. The cutoffs were 101st for men and 99th for women.

Thinner won his fourth Grand Slam title when he defeated second Carlos Alcaraz in the Wimbledon Finals. Sabalenka lost to Amanda Anishimova in the semi-finals.

The US led all countries where 30 players (16 women and 14 men) had direct entry.

Players who qualify using special or protected rankings include Nick Kyrgios, Petra Kvitova and Sorana Cirstea.

Playing in the main draw will begin on August 24th.
