NBA Insider Uncovers Dallas Mavericks Coach’s True Reaction to Losing Quentin Grimes to the Philadelphia 76ers

The Philadelphia 76ers’ offseason has not gone according to plan. Following a disappointing 2024-25 season, the team aimed to make significant adjustments involving their Big 3. However, Paul George’s injury during training and uncertainty over Joel Embiid’s return have once again cast doubt on the team’s future. On top of these setbacks, the team faces another major challenge in securing Quentin Grimes.

Recent updates reveal that negotiations for extending Grimes’ contract have stalled. While the player and his representatives are reportedly seeking a deal worth around $25 million annually, the 76ers appear unlikely to meet these demands given their focus on the Big 3. Grimes, who was traded from the Dallas Mavericks mid-season, impressed during the latter half of the campaign. Yet Tim McMahon indicated that a $25 million yearly contract is unlikely, pointing to past deals such as Naji Marshall’s three-year, $27 million contract as a comparison. McMahon also noted that the Mavericks coach was not pleased with some of the team’s other transactions and that the franchise may not value Grimes highly enough to offer a mid-level exception contract.

Currently, the 76ers operate just $1.8 million below the tax threshold, which allows them to propose a mid-level contract to Grimes. Nevertheless, his reported salary expectations would push the team into a higher tax bracket, making it difficult to meet his demands. Despite his strong performance, the player’s preferred market valuation seems out of reach for the team. Meanwhile, rookie VJ Edge.com has received praise from head coach Nick Nurse, averaging 21.9 points per game with 37.3% shooting from beyond the arc during a season when the 76ers missed the playoffs. Philadelphia is hopeful to retain Edge on a team-friendly contract to bolster scoring, particularly as Paul George may miss games early in the upcoming season.

Fan Take: This contract saga around Quentin Grimes highlights the complex balancing act NBA teams face between retaining young talent and managing salary cap constraints. For basketball fans, this could mean the difference between the 76ers maintaining a competitive lineup or facing another challenging season, dramatically shaping the team’s trajectory in the league.
