Nate Diaz Drops a Bombshell Comeback Wish List, Featuring Iliatopria and Canelo Alvarez as Dream Opponents

Former UFC star Nate Diaz is gearing up for a comeback in both MMA and boxing. Although 2025 is already halfway through, Diaz hasn’t stepped into the octagon or boxing ring since his triumph over Tony Ferguson at UFC 279, after which he parted ways with the UFC. His last fight was a boxing win against former BMF rival Jorge Masvidal last year.

Despite his inactivity, Diaz is eyeing some big fights if negotiations go well, including a potential return to the UFC. Diaz and longtime rival Conor McGregor both plan returns to combat sports next year, with McGregor hoping to fight at a UFC event held at the White House South Lawn in 2026.

Besides McGregor, Diaz expressed interest in fighting Ilia Topuria, the recently crowned UFC lightweight champion, who is aiming to become the organization’s first three-division titleholder. Diaz respects Topuria but notes he’s a bit small for him, though he considers both Topuria and McGregor top contenders for his comeback.

On the boxing front, Diaz is interested in matchups against stars like Canelo Alvarez and Terence Crawford, declaring his ambition to take on these elite fighters with full respect. Diaz’s last boxing bout saw him defeat Masvidal by majority decision. Bare Knuckle FC has also been pursuing Diaz for a deal, but talks have stalled.

Notably, Josh Thomson, the only fighter to have knocked Diaz out, challenged him to a boxing rematch; Thomson defeated Diaz by head kick in 2013. Diaz’s potential fight with Topuria could be compelling as Topuria prepares to defend his lightweight title.

At 40, Diaz is conscious of his limited time to make another mark in the UFC, but he is currently attracting interest from major figures like Topuria, Crawford, and Alvarez for possible high-profile fights.

Fan Take: Nate Diaz’s planned return holds massive significance for fight fans craving big, thrilling matchups, especially with his willingness to face top-tier opponents from both MMA and boxing. This crossover appeal could reignite interest across both sports and bring fresh excitement to combat sports in 2026 and beyond.
