Nico Williams expressed his desire to make history at the Athletic Club, which declined a summer move away from his Basque roots.

Barcelona, which pursued the forward last year, was prepared to activate his release clause of 58 million euros ($67 million).

The Spain international recently extended his contract with Athletic until June 2035. “We have a lengthy season ahead and ambitious goals, including the Champions League,” he remarked.

After winning Euro 2024, Nico has emerged as a highly sought-after forward, attracting interest from clubs like Bayern Munich, Arsenal, and Chelsea.

Mikel Gonzalez, the football director at Athletic, expressed his enthusiasm for Nico’s decision to remain with the club. “He’s a remarkable and exceptional talent, and his continued presence here is fantastic news,” Gonzalez stated.

Nico, who joined Athletic at the age of 11, will continue to play alongside his brother, Iñaki Williams, who is set to captain the first team this season.

“We both dreamed of this moment,” Nico shared. “Iñaki is a role model for everyone, especially for me. He’s the perfect captain, and I’m excited to see him lead the team.”

Gonzalez emphasized the significance of family in the club’s culture, expressing his happiness about Iñaki leading the team while Nico contributes his talents.

Fan Take: Nico Williams’ decision to stay at Athletic Club highlights the importance of loyalty in soccer, especially in an era dominated by high-profile transfers. For fans, it signifies a commitment to the club’s identity and could strengthen local ties, enhancing the overall narrative of the sport.
