Legacy Motor Club Takes Legal Action Against TJ Puchyr Over Alleged “Underhanded” Rickwear Lace Acquisition Attempt

Currently, there are at least five legal cases related to the NASCAR charter controversy, with the Legacy Motor Club involved in three of these suits, either as plaintiff or defendant. Rick Ware Racing (RWR) initially sued Rickwear Race for allegedly reneging on a contract to sell a charter to Legacy in 2026. In response, RWR contested Legacy’s claim, stating that Legacy is trying to secure a different charter than the one originally agreed upon. During this dispute, the Associated Press reported that TJ Puchyr had signed an agreement to purchase all of Rick Ware Racing. In the latest lawsuit, Puchyr accuses Legacy of unfairly blocking his efforts to buy charters from RWR. This follows a warning from Judge Daniel A. Kuenert to RWR that any attempt to sell, contradicting prior court statements denying such plans, could lead to serious repercussions.

Legacy disclosed that Petitle was working with the team via his consulting firm Lucas under an independent contractor agreement, and that he had direct knowledge of the purchase agreement with RWR before making his own bid to buy the race team amid this charter dispute. Legacy claims that, as part of the agreement, Petitle was meant to support and promote Legacy in a way that avoided conflicts of interest and upheld ethical standards to maintain trust. However, Legacy accuses him of betraying their trust by interfering in the legal battle with RWR while seeking to acquire the entire organization, alleging he worked secretly to overturn Legacy’s deal and publicly boasted about his misconduct. They also say Petitle has launched a personal attack on Legacy co-owner and seven-time NASCAR Cup Series champion Jimmie Johnson, questioning Johnson’s understanding of the deal and accusing him of trying to publicly embarrass Rick.
