As the 2024-25 boys’ football season wraps up on Sunday, it’s time to issue one final notification regarding the frontrunners for the Ballon d’Or awards.

Since my last assessment of soccer’s top individual talents during Paris Saint-Germain’s Champions League victory, significant changes have unfolded. While you may recall our previous top six, you might prefer not to look now. Not to mention, Chelsea’s recent triumph over PSG in the Club World Cup Final has stirred up quite a buzz, allowing them to claim global champion status for the next four years. There have also been notable international skirmishes, with Portugal earning some fresh accolades in the Nations League.

Will the Club World Cup carry weight in the Ballon d’Or voting? It’s still too early to determine, but Ousmane Dembele’s contributions during the PSG’s victory might give him an edge. However, several leading European teams such as Barcelona, Liverpool, and Arsenal did not participate in the tournament, making the situation even more complex.

From my perspective, FIFA’s event holds less weight than the Champions League, which inevitably affects our performance rankings. However, PSG’s recent successes affirm their consistency under Luis Enrique’s guidance even amid the absence of several key players. The CBS Sports Ballon d’Or rankings may involve various committees, but they don’t take external comments lightly.

Let’s dive into the current standings and discuss them.

1. Mohamed Salah – Liverpool (+2500)

What’s true from six weeks ago remains unchanged, and the Club World Cup performances haven’t altered that. With a remarkable season of 34 goals and 23 assists, Salah’s contributions are on par with legends like Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo. His exceptional work during the Premier League title run before spring showcased his caliber.

2. Raphinha – Barcelona (+2500)

Given Barcelona’s accomplishments in the 2024-25 season, Raphinha has emerged as a crucial player, delivering a standout season in the Champions League and achieving La Liga success.

3. Ousmane Dembele – PSG (-500)

Dembele’s performance at the Club World Cup could potentially elevate him in our rankings. His impressive performances against top challengers showcased his talent, despite the tournament not being widely regarded as the pinnacle of football.

Dembele’s chances were hampered by injuries, limiting him to only three matches before the final. His standout performances against Bayern Munich and Real Madrid revealed his class but also reflected PSG’s overall showing during their Champions League campaign. While Dembele shines as a key player, it’s the collective effort of the team that stands out.

4. Khvicha Kvaratskhelia – PSG (+4000)

While Kvaratskhelia’s contributions might seem undervalued, he has won titles in two top European leagues and the Champions League. His creativity and flair have made him one of the most exciting players this season.

5. Pedri – Barcelona (+5000)

If you missed last season, Pedri continues to be a phenomenal playmaker and has developed into one of the sport’s most complete midfielders, showcasing exceptional ball-winning skills alongside his attacking prowess.

6. Laminyamal – Barcelona (+400)

One of the notable discussions this past month revolved around Laminyamal being ranked outside the top five. While greatness often shines in big matches, Yamal’s strong season has been undeniable, bolstered by a new contract.

7. Achraf Hakimi – PSG (+2800)

Hakimi serves as the engine driving PSG’s success, displaying remarkable stamina and skill. He performed outstandingly in the Club World Cup and was instrumental against both Bayern Munich and Real Madrid.

8. Vitinha – PSG (+1000)

Vitinha’s strong performances significantly contributed to his rise up the rankings, especially in the Nations League final. He has been crucial among Portugal’s midfield talents.

9. Gianluigi Donnarumma – PSG (+5000)

Donnarumma’s absence from various highlights has hampered his rankings, but he has had standout moments with crucial saves, particularly against Bayern Munich in the quarterfinals of the Club World Cup.

10. Cole Palmer – Chelsea (+2000)

The departures of several notable players have opened opportunities for others, with Kylian Mbappe’s situation being particularly intriguing despite his prolific scoring last season. Palmer made a significant impression in Chelsea’s 3-0 triumph, reaffirming his rising talent.

Fan Take: This news highlights the dynamic nature of football as players’ performances can shift perceptions quickly, especially leading up to prestigious awards like the Ballon d’Or. For soccer fans, recognizing these shifts can deepen appreciation for individual talents and their impact on the sport’s narrative throughout the seasons.
