Penguin’s 2025-26 Schedule Shines with Early California Adventures and a Packed March

The Pittsburgh Penguins have officially released their schedule for the 2025-26 NHL season on Wednesday.

Fans were already aware that the team would kick off the season against the New York Rangers on October 7th, but many were waiting for the full schedule to plan which games they could attend. The Penguins’ home opener is set for October 9th against the New York Islanders, followed by a home game against the Rangers on October 11th.

This second Rangers matchup marks the first time Mike Sullivan returns to Pittsburgh as the Rangers’ head coach since he left the Penguins on April 28th, shortly before being hired by New York on May 2nd. Bob Grove noted it’s the first time since the 1998-99 season that the Penguins start their season with three consecutive games against New York-based teams.

With the complete schedule now out, here are some key highlights and insights:

March is a Challenging Stretch
After the Winter Olympics break at the end of February, the Penguins will face a grueling March with 17 games in 31 days. They will compete against some of the league’s top projected teams, including the Vegas Golden Knights (twice), Carolina Hurricanes (twice), Colorado Avalanche (twice), Winnipeg Jets, and Dallas Stars. This tough stretch could be compounded by potential roster changes around the 2026 trade deadline, possibly leaving the Penguins short-handed.

Quick California Road Trip
The Penguins’ trip to California early in the season is efficient and concise. Following their opening games in New York, they’ll face the Anaheim Ducks, Los Angeles Kings, and San Jose Sharks in one road trip during the second week of October. They start in Anaheim, then go to Los Angeles, and finish in San Jose before returning home to face the Vancouver Canucks. Fans can look forward to some late-night matchups, perfect for settling in with a warm drink.

16 Consecutive Games
The Penguins will experience 16 straight games during the season, the longest streak since 2017-18. This level of consecutive play has become familiar during the Sidney Crosby era. One notable back-to-back happens on April 4th and 5th when they host the Florida Panthers, allowing both teams to avoid travel disruptions. Goalie rotations will likely be crucial during such intense stretches.

Early Wake-Up Calls for Fans
November brings the NHL Global Series in Stockholm, Sweden, with the Penguins facing the Nashville Predators on November 14th and 16th. The first game starts at 2pm ET, but the second opens at 9am ET, challenging early risers, especially those on the West Coast where the game begins at 6am.

Only One Trip to Washington, D.C.
Despite a fierce rivalry with the Washington Capitals during the Crosby vs. Ovechkin era, the Penguins make only one visit to Capital One Arena this season. They play three times in total, with two games at PPG Paints Arena. Their visit to Washington on April 12th comes right after a home game against the Capitals on April 11th. If this season marks a final run for stars like Evgeni Malkin or Alex Ovechkin, these matchups could serve as memorable farewells.

Every NHL season brings its unique challenges and storylines, and the Penguins’ 2025-26 schedule offers plenty to anticipate. Though the season is still months away, the excitement is starting to build.

Fan Take: This schedule is a thrilling roadmap for hockey fans, promising intense rivalries, critical matchups, and opportunities to witness potential farewells of iconic players. It underscores how the sport continues to blend tradition with evolving storylines, keeping fans engaged and eager for every puck drop.
