Sainz needs to be delivered later, Williams’ Vaules says

Williams team principal James Bowles says his target for the second half of Formula 1 season with Carlos Sainz is to turn demonstrated potential into results.

Sainz joined Williams from Ferrari ahead of the 2025 season, marking a major addition as the winner of four races alongside Alex Albon. Albon scored 46 points in the opening round, but Sainz scored just 13 points for his name after missing multiple opportunities, and Vowles says it was combined with failures from both the team and driver that affected his points tally.

“I don’t think we’re bringing everything we can do with him this year,” Bowles said. “And it was a mixture all over the place. There were errors he was doing well. There were absolutely some errors that we got off track. There were accidents.

“For me, it’s about drawing a line in the sand and going on from the spa onwards. We’ve got a lot of really good races coming for us. That’s about the car delivering the results that are in it.

“For Carlos, that’s achieved results that we know we can do together, but this year we haven’t.”

While acknowledging Albon’s performance, Vowles says they need to maximize the opportunities their teams have offered.

“In Alex’s case, we build on what we did at the beginning of the year and make sure we’re aware that we’ve stepped back a bit, but we’re going to make sure we move forward with the performance of our cars and start extracting everything from the qualifications we can,” he said.

“We’ve now obviously got off to a very strong start along the way, and we’ve collapsed a bit like others added performance to our car. Now we have a small update that comes to the spa. What we really have to do is make the performance of the car available to us.
