Connor Zarry Sets His Sights on Igniting the Flames Next

Connor Zarry should be a priority for Flames’ GM Craig Conroy to re-sign. The 23-year-old forward, currently a restricted free agent, doesn’t yet have superstar statistics but showed promise last season with 13 goals, 14 assists, and 27 points in 53 games.

Zarry’s potential to be a top-six forward was evident before injuries slowed his progress—first a knee collision in Anaheim followed by a hard fall during a game against Dallas. When healthy, he is a playmaker who generates exciting offensive opportunities. Over a full season, he could reach around 25 goals and 50 points. In the 2022-23 AHL season with the Wranglers, he demonstrated his scoring ability by playing all 72 games, scoring 21 goals, and accumulating 58 points.

Zarry’s versatility is another asset, as he can switch from wing to center, offering much-needed stability to Calgary’s lineup. Though he can occasionally get inconsistent, his game is mature, and if he can maintain that consistency, he could become a crucial part of the Flames’ forward core.

Selected 24th overall in the 2020 draft, Zarry is currently on a three-year entry-level contract with a modest cap hit of $863,334. The Flames are in a solid position to secure him at good value. While his production hasn’t yet reached his potential ceiling, it’s clear he’s progressing past just being a future prospect to someone who can actively impact games.

Fan Take: Locking down Zarry could be a game-changer for the Flames, offering both skill and versatility that are vital for a deep playoff run. Hockey fans should keep an eye on his development—it could signal the rise of a new dynamic forward in the league.
