Flashback Friday: Catching Up with Alexander Wenberg — Where Is He Today?

Alexander Wenberg was selected 14th overall in the first round of the 2013 NHL Entry Draft. After six seasons playing for the Columbus Blue Jackets and Florida Panthers, he joined the Seattle Kraken as an unrestricted free agent on July 28, 2021.

A fan favorite known for his speed and playmaking talent, Wenberg scored 33 goals and assisted 67 times across nearly three seasons with the Kraken in 222 games. He was credited with nine game-winning goals during his time there.

In March 2024, the Kraken traded Wenberg to the New York Rangers in exchange for a 2025 draft pick and a conditional fourth-round pick in the same year. Wenberg wrapped up that season with the Rangers, marking his 700th NHL game.

Now a free agent once again, Wenberg has signed a two-year, $10 million deal with the San Jose Sharks. The 2025-26 season represents the second year of this contract. In the 2024-25 season, he played 77 games facing the Sharks, accumulating 35 points through 10 goals and 25 assists. It remains uncertain whether the Sharks will re-sign this veteran center or use him as potential trade leverage, as the team continues to rebuild with younger talent.

Relatedly, the Montreal Canadiens recently signed Seattle Kraken forward Joe Vereno to a one-year, $900,000 contract following his acquisition.

Fan Take: Wenberg’s move to the Sharks highlights the dynamic nature of team-building in the NHL, where veteran experience is balanced with youth development. His presence on a rebuilding Sharks team could provide much-needed leadership and skill, making this an intriguing storyline for fans watching how teams shape their futures.
